Scholar Selection

• Students will be considered if they:
     - Have an overall SAT scores above 1200.
     - Math SAT scores are above 600.
     - Plan to major in the biomedical field.
     - Express an interest in pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD degree.
• Students must be nominated by their high school superintendent, principal, or guidance chairperson.
• Completed applications from the nominated student will be reviewed by a committee.
• Selected students participate in an on-campus "Selection Weekend," after which the committee will review all students' performance and   choose those who are the most qualified.

Academic Year Requirements

Pre-Freshman
• Students chosen to become HHMI Scholars will participate in the six-week residential program in conjunction with the Meyerhoff   Summer Bridge prior to their freshman year. This Bridge program consists of:
     - Field trips and site visits to technical and scientific sites in the Baltimore-Washington region;
     - Mathematics (based on placement test) and a Chemistry Workshop,
     - African American Studies,
     - Workshops and seminars focusing on issues of higher education including Summer Internships, Public Speaking and        Presentation Skills, Academic Advising, Professional Development.

Freshman Year
• Participate in four - five-week rotations with different research-active faculty during the Fall and Spring semesters, attending all group   meetings and learning about the various research projects in the laboratories.
• Attend monthly meetings, where students present and evaluate their undergraduate research.
• Select a research mentor at the end of their Freshman Year.

Sophomore Year
• Participate in full-time research activity in the laboratory of their selected UMBC advisor during the summer prior to the Sophomore   year, continuing during the Fall and Spring semesters (10 hrs/week), and also during the intervening one-month winter break.
• Serve as tutors in science and math at Baltimore's inner city and county schools (~ 2 hrs/week), coordinated with the Shriver Center   during the Fall and Spring semester.
• Attend monthly meetings, where students present and evaluate their undergraduate research.
• Attend a national scientific conference, preferably with their research mentors.
• During the Spring semester, students will work with the Program Coordinator to secure an off-campus research position. Efforts will   be made to place students in the laboratory of an HHMI Investigator with common interests.

Junior Year
Conduct full-time research in the selected HHMI Laboratory during the summer prior to their Junior year.
• Have the option of remaining with the host institution of the HHMI Investigator during their junior year as an exchange student and a   research assistant, if mutually agreeable.
• Participate in a research activity in the laboratory of their selected UMBC advisor during the Fall and Spring semesters (10   hrs/week), and during the intervening one-month winter break (full-time).
• Participate in monthly meetings, giving presentations on their research.
• Participate in a grantsmanship workshop.
• Present their research findings at a national scientific conference, preferably with their research advisor.
• Tutor in the Chemistry Tutorial Center (~2 hours/week).

Senior Year
• May chose to conduct off-campus research (preferably with an HHMI Investigator), or continue pursuing research with a UMBC   faculty member during the summer that precedes their Senior year.
• Participate in a research activity in the laboratory of their selected UMBC advisor during the Fall and Spring semesters (10   hrs/week), and during the intervening one-month winter break (full-time).
• Participate in monthly meetings, giving presentations on their research.
• Participate in a grantsmanship workshop.
• Present their research findings at a national scientific conference.
• Apply for Graduate Fellowships to support their studies after they leave UMBC.
• Tutor in the Chemistry Tutorial Center (~2 hours/week).
